Hi, I'm Alanna from South Korea and recently a Junior at Emma Willard School. As a Junior, I got the chance to do my own project. With the passion I have in all parts of science, especially in Biology and Chemistry, I wanted to join the Signature Project for myself and also for people around me. From when I was little, since both of my parents were busy, I spent my whole childhood with my grandmother. I came to study abroad two years ago, and heard that my grandmother was diagnosed as a lung cancer. Last year, I started to wonder about what caused my grandmother, who doesn’t smoke at all and doesn’t have smokers around, to have a lung cancer. From then, I have been searching about what causes and how to solve the problem. According to journals and books, higher rate of middle aged women in Asia, where ventilation system is lacking, are diagnosed as lung cancer. Relating to the trend, the conclusion was made that there should be something wrong with cooking. After continuous research, I found out that the gases, PAHs and HCAs, are emitted when cooking, especially in high temperature; those gases are mutagenic that cause lung cancer. As to start the Signature Project and research, I want to not only improve my knowledge in science and laboratory skills but also show love and passion can make a huge difference in the world.
